Sun Jan 21:

THE SCORPIOS

https://youtu.be/pgpG5HMevzU

Hailing from Central Sudan and now based in London after fleeing the fundamentalist takeover in that region, the Scorpios are a septet that melds Arabic rhythms and guitar chops (and a kind of swooning cyclical ecstasy) with a raw Eastern funk feel, properly dismantling cultural barriers in pursuit of a unifying rhythmic bliss. Heavy bass, synths, horns and percussions drive through traditional Sudanese forms to create

a sound that is as much Detroit as Khartoum.

Their mind-blowing musical meltdown of hypnotic psychedelic Sudanese rhythms, Afrobeat and eastern funk  came together when they met London based guitarist Adam Bulewski. The band centres round five Sudanese musicians who left their homelands as refugees in the 80's, when the situation in their home land became unbearable. Their sensational lead singer Regia Ishag is feted in Sudan and comes from a respected musical family. The other four members are steeped in the traditional songs performed at weddings and religious festivals around the Horn of Africa and the Arab states. Their unique sound is created from traditional songs and Sudanese pop from the 60's and 70's. The Sudanese core of the Scorpios are supported by an international backing band of ace musicians from Ghana, Jamaica, Poland, Japan and the UK.
